Paulownia VJ Lining Boards

Lightweight, single-piece timber lining for walls and ceilings

Our Paulownia VJ lining boards bring the warmth of real timber to ceilings, feature walls and joinery, at a fraction of the weight of traditional hardwood lining. Each standard board is a single piece of clear, plantation-grown Paulownia, with no finger joints or laminated seams, for a clean, continuous grain from end to end.

We supply our lining boards unfinished, so you, your builder or your designer can choose the exact coating for the project, including low-VOC oils, waterborne clear coats, stains and paints. For large orders we can also supply the boards finished and ready to install, with a high quality polyurethane finish.

Why Paulownia lining boards

  • Single-piece boards: our standard 2.4 m boards are cut from one length of timber. Many lining products are finger-jointed or laminated to reach length; ours show uninterrupted grain.

  • Ultra-lightweight: at around 260–300 kg/m³, Paulownia is one of the lightest commercial timbers available, roughly half the weight of pine. Boards are easy to handle overhead and put minimal load on ceiling framing.

  • Dimensionally stable: very low shrinkage and swelling means boards resist cupping, twisting and gapping as humidity changes.

  • Clean, knot-free grain: a pale blond timber with a straight grain that takes finishes evenly, from natural oils to bold stains.

  • Easy to work on site: cuts, drills and sands cleanly with ordinary tools and is easy on blades.

  • Sustainably grown: plantation Paulownia is the world's fastest-growing hardwood, reaching maturity in 5–8 years and regrowing from the stump after harvest.

Supplied unfinished: your choice of finish

Because every project has different requirements for colour, sheen, durability and indoor air quality, we supply our lining boards raw. This lets you specify the finish that suits the project, including low-VOC and water-based products for healthier interiors, natural hard-wax oils, or stains and paints to match a design scheme. For large orders we can also supply the boards finished and ready to install, with a high quality polyurethane finish. Contact us for a quote.

Paulownia accepts finishes evenly without blotching. For best results, finish all four sides of each board before installation to help keep boards stable, and follow your coating manufacturer's instructions.

Applications

  • Ceilings and raked ceilings

  • Feature walls and wall linings

  • Bulkheads, soffits and covered outdoor areas (protected from direct weather)

  • Joinery panels, wardrobe and cabinet backs

  • Caravan, campervan and marine interior fit-outs, where weight savings matter

  • Commercial interiors, retail and hospitality fit-outs

Custom profiles and longer lengths

We can supply lining boards to suit your design: different widths and thicknesses, alternative profiles, or longer lengths. Our standard 2.4 m boards are single-piece; where a project needs longer continuous boards, we can supply them finger-jointed. Tell us your dimensions, quantity and project timing and we'll quote accordingly.

Installation tips

  • Store boards flat and allow them to acclimatise on site before installation.

  • Seal or finish all faces and ends before fixing.

  • Fix to battens or framing following your installer's and adhesive manufacturer's recommendations.

  • Leave expansion gaps at perimeters as you would for any timber lining.
